If you jump barefoot on a hard surface, your legs are injured. But they are not injured if you jump on a soft surface like sand or pillow. Why?

Answer:

It is due to the stronger force exerted by the hard surface on our legs so they get injured. On the other hand if we jump on the soft surfaces like sand or pillow it takes more time to achieve zero velocity as our legs plunge to a distance.

If you jump barefoot on a hard surface, your legs are injured but not in soft surface like sand or pillow, because the soft surface exerts less force on our feet and does not cause pain.

Explanation:

  • On a hard surface our downward velocity reaches zero, which means that the acceleration is high.
  • This is due to the strong force that the hard surface exerts on our feet, so that they are injured.
  • If, on the other hand, we jump on soft surfaces like sand or pillows, it will take more time to reach zero velocity because our feet are at a certain distance.

Thus, rate of change of velocity is slower because the soft surface exerts less force on our feet and does not cause any pain.
