Hindi (हिंदी/இந்தி/هندى) is a proper noun so it cannot be translated or transphonated in English or any language. Word ‘Hindi’ simply means ‘of, from or related with India’ or ‘Indian’. It’s a middle-eastern word which might have originated in either Arabic or Persian (Farsi).

In antiquity, people from Gulf region started to use word ‘Hind’ (as synonymous) for India or Indian sub-continent. The word might have got derived from Sindhu river - word ‘Sindhu’ became ‘Sind’ and later got changed into ‘Hind’.

In Arabic, ‘Al-Hind’ (آل هند) means ‘India’ and ‘Jamhuria Ul-Hind’ (جمهورية الهند) means ‘Republic of India’ or ‘Indian Republic’ (भारतीय गणराज्य) (). Words Hindi (word for a language), Hindi (word for citizen of India) and Hindu (people belonging to land of India) have been originated from root word ‘Hind’.
