let the number be K

decreased by 30 = k - 30

k - 30 is same as 14 decreased by 3k

k - 30 = 3k - 40

k - 3k = -40 + 30

-2k = -10

k = -10/-2

k = 5

5 is the number.....!!!!!

x-30 = 14-3x

x-3x = 14-30

-2x = -16

x = 8
