If you place your ear close to an iron railing and your friend taps it some distance away, you hear the sound twice.why is it so?

We hear the sound twice as the speed of sound is more in solid than the air . When your friend touches the railing the sound travelled in the solid is heard at first and then the sound travelled in air. This leads to two sounds
