When you place one ear on iron railing and tap it at a distance, two vibrations are made in two different media.
One travels through iron railing at a greater speed than air.
Second wave travels trough air (longitudinally) at speed less than iron railing.
Hence, first sound is from the iron railing and second sound is heard from the air. The time difference between two sounds is sufficient enough for our mind to distinguish that two sounds are produced and not one.
