if you pour a handful of salt into a full glass of water, the water level will actually go down rather than overflowing the glass.Similarly,if you mix half a liter of alochol and half a liter of water, the total volume of liquid will be less than one liter.Explain why?

Answer:

A handful of salt is a lot of salt. If you dump that in a glass of water, the water will go up. If you put a smaller amount of salt in so it could all dissolve, then the level would not change.

Actually, come to think of it, suppose you put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then go on vacation. By the time you get back, I’m pretty sure the level of the water will have gone down.
