If you push a heavy box which is at rest, you must exert some force to start its motion. However, once the box is sliding, you can apply a lesser force to maintain that motion. Why?

When a heavy box is at rest we will be needed to get it into motion because every surfaces has irregularities though they may seem plain. When the object is at rest the irregularities between the box and the groung or surface get locked up and get that box into motion we need to apply a lot of forces.once it forms into motion the irregularities dont get enough time to get locked up so we don't need to apply much force.
