If you push on a heavy box which is at
rest, you must exert some force to
start its motion. However, once the
box is sliding, you can apply a smaller
force to maintain the motion. Why?

To start the motion one has to apply limiting friction but after the start of motion one has to apply kinetic friction . Limiting friction is greater than kinetic friction . So one has to put more force while start of the motion .
