If you push on a heavy box which is at rest, you must exert some force to start its motion. However, once the box is sliding, you can apply a smaller force to maintain that motion. Why?

because once the object comes in motion,it just desires to be in that motion as per Newton's law. since its already moving, we can maintain its speed with less force.
