Let the number be 'y'
given that,
                (y-1/2)*1/2=1/8
                 y-1/2=1/8 divided by 1/2
                         =(1/8)/(1/2)
                         =1/8*2/1
                         =2/8
                         =1/4
Therefore, y     =1/4+1/2
                        =1/4+2/4
                        =3/4

Therefore the number from which you need to subtract 1/2 is 3/4
