If you subtract 40 from a number, the difference will be 1/3 of the original number. Find the number.

let number be x .

x - 40 =  \frac{1}{3} x

 - 40 =  \frac{1}{3} x - x

 - 40 =  \frac{1}{3}  -  \frac{3}{3} x

 - 40 =  \frac{ - 2}{3} x

 40 \times  \frac{3}{2}  = x

60 = x
