Answer:

If I were to design my own house, a lot of what I’d have would be a mixture of what I’ve learnt from living in a huge range of houses throughout my life.

My house would be three storeys, possibly four if I were to choose to have a basement. However, it would only have three bedrooms because I’m a single person and that’s all I need.

The first thing that people would notice about my house is that it would be a diamond shape on its plot. At the front would be a circular tower, rising the full three storeys. In it there would be a spiral staircase that would be a statement piece in an otherwise fairly simple design.

On the ground floor there would be a living room with open fire that would be open plan into the dining area. The TV would be sited so that I could watch it both from the dining area and the living room area. There would be a downstairs loo off the hall area, perhaps under the stairs. The kitchen would be somewhat wider than a typical galley kitchen but that basic shape and 20 feet long. I don’t think it’s possible to have too much counter space in a kitchen. I would also have a small utility room but it wouldn’t be in the usual place but on the first floor, near the bedrooms. It would contain the washing machine, tumble dryer and a sink, plus room for and ironing board. There would also be a small room of it that most people would wonder what it was for. It would be the litter tray room and a place to keep cat paraphernalia.

The master bedroom would be very large, 18'x11' and would have the best aspect on that floor. I’d have an en suite with a bath and separate shower. The family bathroom would be similar and a decent size, with plenty of room for towels, storage of loo rolls and bathroom cleaning stuff.

The second bedroom would be 12'x12' and have a double bed. The third bedroom would be a similar size with two single beds.

The stairs up to the second floor would lead to a landing with two doors. One door would lead into the loft space that would be designed to be easily converted into two more bedrooms and a bathroom. The other door would be curved and lead into the room at in the circular tower. When you closed the door behind you, it would disappear into the panelling and you’d need to remember where it was. This room would be a relaxation room with a TV, stereo and a log burner. The windows would be full-length and open onto Juliet balconies or possibly real balconies. The ceiling would be domed and be decorated with a planetarium. The design would allow for steps down into the centre of the room with recessed sofas that in my mind would be upholstered in white leather. The panelling would be painted in white gloss and behind one of the panels would be a sink and things like an electric kettle and a toaster oven. The floor would be polished wood.

The flooring throughout would be wood, vinyl or stone. The decor would be fairly traditional and I would not have any magnolia anywhere, except for real magnolia in the garden. The external appearance of the property would be conventional, apart from the tower. The roof would be tiled in slate, sourced from a British quarry. The house would have underfloor heating throughout and a ground source heat pump. In the grounds of the house there would be a double garage in a barn-style building with an art studio on the upper floor. The garage building would have solar panels on its south-facing roof.

The garden would be designed for low maintenance, while also being interesting. If I were to have the money to build this dream house, I’d have enough to retain the services of a garden contractor. I love gardens but hate gardening, so paying a someone to do the work would pay a huge dividend in making the thing enjoyable.

I would have at least three cats.

Just in case I ever need it, the stairs would be designed so that a stairlift could be easily installed and removed again later, leaving no sign that it had ever been there.
