When I was in high school I had to choose a college major and I chose electrical engineering which is pretty close to physics. I had a curiosity for biology and chemistry but I didn’t like the way they were taught (always blame the teachers…). In chemistry atoms were behaving strangely based on mysterious laws of physics (duh!) and then there are millions of compounds and you start memorizing their names one by one. In biology the systems seem to have infinite complexity and you end up learning the structure of this vs. the structure of that. It seemed harder to learn. Compare to the above, physics seems to emerge out of a few intuitive laws that are easy to learn and follow as long as you don’t mind a little math too.

Those were the high schooler’s perspectives. I made my choice and I don’t regret it but in hindsight I realize that I could have done just as well and probably enjoy equally any of the other two fields. You can’t be wrong if you like one of these subject and choose it because college would be more fun.

In hindsight what would I have chosen today? Maybe the same but I would have been torn between physics and biology. The working of a living machine is amazing to study and there is so much to do in further research and in industry, such as medical research. What about Chemistry? It is sandwiched between physics and biology and gives freedom to stay in the middle or veer up or down the ladder. Important and flexible, just personally I’d rather stay with one of my perceived extreme.

I have never met a graduate of any of those three subject (and I’ve met many) who regretted his or her original choice. "
