If you were private quench what mistakes would you have avoided to ensure that you earn a commission in the army

I would have changed my condescending attitude and also my habit of sermonising to ensure that I'd earn a commission in army. The most important thing for me would be to follow a code of conduct as laid down and not insult others. Also not being over confident , ,ostentatious and impertinent would have helped me to accomplish my goal.
