You need to ensure you have a common understanding of the purpose of the business is. What it is there to do or enable. Discuss with the CEO and leadership what success looks like:
From the customer's point of view that are using the products/services of the business, you are consulting
1 . From the investor's point of view
2 . From the C-Level point of view
3 . From the employee point of view
4 . From the partners’ point of view
You will generally find that as you talk to different people across the org, you will get different understandings around:
What the purpose of the business is
What success looks like
Start by ensuring you can understand and describe in a paragraph no longer than 4 lines on an A4 portrait page at a font point size no smaller than 12 (no cheating).
Once you can describe the purpose of the business and what success looks like in a short, eloquent way that people give you the thumbs up for…….you can then appropriately engage and help guide them towards the value that delivers to the desired outcomes.
Remember that you cannot help people unless:
You understand what value is to them
They want to be helped, and you have an area/capability to help them accelerate that value (accelerating sales, operating better at cheaper cost-per-transaction, offering visibility and transparency, enabling people to focus on core purpose etc .
