If you were the Government of India in 1862 and responsible for supplying the railways With sleepers and fuel on such a large scale, What were the steps you would have taken?

I would have raised some rules and regulation like: no illegal entry in the forest, no illegal wood cutting and grazing, employing more trees on a place where an old one was cut, use of coal instead of wood for fuel.

The following are some of the steps I would have taken if I were the Government of India in 1862:

1. My primary responsibility lied to ensure proper forest management.

2. I would have established a limit for trees to be cut down from a particular forest so as to evade the chaotic cutting of trees.

3. Cutting of trees would have to be remunerated with an equivalent cost of sowing of trees.  For this private constructors would have been given the contract.

4. I would have taught people about the benefits of scientific forestry and the science of conservation.

5. A particular department would have been establishing by me to keep a check on the activities in forests.
