Question:

[Image from document given in question is attached with the answer plus typed too]

1. Work out

(a) (-20) + 85 - (-15)

(b) \ 2\frac{1}{4} + 1\frac{1}{6} - \frac{2}{3}

[ Hint: Find the L.C.M of 4,6,3.... Then make the denominators same]

2. Find the product using distributive property

(a) 75 * (-68) + (-68) * 25

(b) (-39) * 103

[ Hint: Write 103 as (100+3) Then use distributive property]

3. (a) Multiply: 3\frac{2}{5} * 4\frac{1}{6}

(b) Find: \frac{5}{8} \ of \ 4\frac{4}{7}

4. Divide: (a) | (-64) \div (4) | \div (-8)

(b) 3\frac{1}{3} \div 1 \frac{5}{6}

Solution:

1. (a) (-20) + 85 - (-15) = -20 + 85 + 15 = -20 + 100 = 80

(b) \ 2\frac{1}{4} + 1\frac{1}{6} - \frac{2}{3} = \frac{9}{4} + \frac{7}{6} - \frac{2}{3} = \frac{27 + 14 - 8}{12} = \frac{33}{12}

2. (a) 75 * (-68) + (-68) * 25 = (-68) * (75 + 25) = (-68) * (100) = -6800

(b) (-39) * 103 = (-39) * (100+3) = (-39) * 100 + (-39) * 3 = -3900 + (-117) = -4017

3. (a) 3\frac{2}{5} * 4\frac{1}{6} = \frac{17}{5} * \frac{25}{6} = \frac{17}{1} * \frac{5}{6} = \frac{85}{6}

(b) \frac{5}{8} \ of \ 4\frac{4}{7} = \frac{5}{8} * \frac{32}{7} = \frac{5}{1} * \frac{4}{7} = \frac{20}{7}

4. (a) | (-64) \div (4) | \div (-8) = | -16 | \div (-8) = 16 \div (-8) = -2

(b) 3\frac{1}{3} \div 1 \frac{5}{6} = \frac{10}{3} \div \frac{11}{6} = \frac{10}{3} * \frac{6}{11} = \frac{10}{1} * \frac{2}{11} = \frac{20}{11}

We take reciprocal when we change from division to multiplication
