If we plot the earthquake epicentres, active volcanoes and major mountain ranges on the map of tectonic plates then there will be areas where these geologic features are concentrated. This is because-

  • Lava is present in the subduction zone when two plates having different densities collide with each other. The raised part of the lighter plate forms major mountain ranges with time. The eruption of lava forms volcanic mountains. Hence, major mountain ranges and volcanoes are concentrated in some areas.
  • Most of the earthquake epicentres lie close to the volcanoes because volcanic eruptions lead to the movement of nearby plates present under Earth's crust and thus, result in earthquakes.
