[Calculate the speed of light in Zircon, a material used in jewelry to imitate diamond. (speed of light in Air = 3x108 ms-1 and Index of Refraction of Zircon = 1.923)]

Concept

The speed of light v in a material can be calculated from the index of refraction n of the material using the equation n = c / v.  ....(1)

Given

We have given the speed of light in air 3\times10^8m/s and index of refraction of Zircon which is 1.923 .

Find

We are asked to determine the speed of light in zirconium.

Solution

It is given that c=3\times10^8m/s , \ n=1.923

Putting these values in equation (1) , we get

v=\frac{c}{n}\\\\\v=\frac{3\times10^8}{1.923} \\\\v=1.56\times10^8m\s

This speed is slightly faster than half the speed of light in a vacuum and is still high compared to the speed we usually experience.

Therefore, the speed of light in zirconium is 1.56\times10^8m/s
