 It depends on which of the 5 WBC types is high in concentration, and how high above normal it is.There are three cases :-

1.) A moderately elevated neutrophil or lymphocute population (for example) could indicate an infection; a higher-than-normal number of eosinophils could indicate a reaction to an allergy.

2.) If any of the WBC populations is extremely high, or based on their physical characteristics, composed largely of immature cells rather than mature ones, it could be an indication of some type of leukemia.

3.) In some cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia that I have seen, for example, the concentration of lymphocytes, instead of the normal 2000–3000 per microliter, have been over 100,000.
