Solution :

x + y = 1 \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: ...(1) \\ x - y = 3 \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: ...(2)

Add both equations

x + y = 1

+ x - y = 3

2x + 0 = 4

2x = 4

x = 4/2

x = 2

The value of x is 2.

Put the value of x in equation (1)

x + y = 1 \\ 2 +  y = 1 \\ y = 1 - 2 \\ y =  - 1

The value of y is -1
