$x + y = 7 \div 2$

Mark it as 1st

$xy = 5 \div 2$

Mark it as 2nd eq

Squaring both side

$(x + y) {}^{2} = (7 \div 2) {}^{2}$

$x {}^{2} + 2xy + y {}^{2} = 49 \div 4$

We knows the value of xy

Then putting

$x {}^{2} + y {}^{2} + 2 \times 5 \div 2 = 49 \div 2$

Then cut 2 on rhs

$x {}^{2} + y {}^{2} = 49 \div (2 \times 5)$

$x {}^{2} + y {}^{2} = 4.9$
