the reason they are referred as primary is that they acts as a source for the formation of other two, after the formation of igneous rocks by cooling and solidification of lava coming from deep in the interior of earth and erupted on earth surface by any volcanic activity ,they come in contact with nature and by prolonged erosion and weathering they form sediments which consolidates to form sedimentary rocks , later on with effect of Pressure and temprature they are metamorphosed to form metamorphic rocks, so being the source for all other types igneous rocks are called primary rocks..

Igneous Rocks are obtained from lava of volcanoes. They start the rock cycle which involves of changing rocks from their types. Basically, All the Rocks are Derived From them. So, They are the only primary source of Other Rocks.

Hence, It is also known as Primary Rocks.
