Ignite (burn) a piece of coal in air. Hold a moist blue & red litmus paper over the gas released on igniting
the coal. Take cooking oil, water and kerosene in three different conical flasks. Add half a spoon of coal
powder in each of the conical flasks and stir them. Note down your observations.

Answer:

the moist blue litmus paper will turn to red it signifies that acidic gas has formed on burning coal. In cooking oil the coal will not dissolve it will be suspended or slightly dissolved. In water it will not dissolve and in kerosene it will dissolve slightly. The substance formed will be black in colour it will weight like the substance from which we started (coal).
