Question

A 1200 kg car drives west at 25 m/s for 3 hr.

What is the car's momentum?

Answer

Given,

Mass = 1200kg

Speed = 25 m/s

Time = 3hr

Momentum =?

We have,

p = mv, where p=momentum, m=mass and v=velocity.

Now,

Momentum (p)=mass(m) × velocity(v)

p = 1200kg × 25m/s

p = 30000kg m/s

Therefore the momentum of the car is 30000kg m/s

Additional information

✍︎Momentum refers to the strength of motion

✍︎ To calculate momentum,mass and velocity must be known

✍︎ momentum is represented by 'p' , where p comes from the Latin word "petere" which means to go toward or rush upon.

✍︎ The S.I unit of momentum is (kg•m/s)

30000 kgm/s. P(momentum)=M•V

1200x 25m/s= 30000.
