Answer:
Poem and Poet: These lines are taken from the poem ‘The Magical Earth’ written by Sompooran Singh Karla, whose pen name is Gulzar’s famous Green Poems. His Green Poems in Hindi were translated into English by Pavan Kumar Varma. The poet glorifies the earth by describing her resources, richness and her great capacity to give.
Context and Meaning: Gulzar praises the giving nature of the earth. He expresses his surprise at the earth’s capacity to give us so many things. He terms this capacity poetically as magical. He opens the poem with the statement that the earth in his garden really has something. And this applies to earth everywhere and anywhere. And he asks then a question innocently. “Is this earth Magical?” He does not wait for an answer. He knows it and possible to explain. Yet, the question itself speaks volumes about the glory of the earth. Gulzar’s poetic skill becomes evident in these lines.
Critical Appreciation: “The Green Poem” speaks about the richness of the earth. Gulzar’s poetic skill is clearly visible as he cites simple examples. He makes us realize truths like the earth being a consumer, a giver and a beneficiary of mankind.
