Answer:

'First Maratha War (1775-82): The main cause of the first Maratha war was the increased interference of the British in the affairs, both internal and external, of the Marathas and also the struggle for power between Madhav Rao and Raghunath Rao.

-An Indian ruler entering into a subsidiary alliance with the British had to accept British forces in his territory and also agreed to pay for their maintenance. Such a ruler would not form an alliance with any other power, nor would he declare war against any power without the permission of the British.

-The Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817–1818) was the final and decisive conflict between the British East India Company (EIC) and the Maratha Empire in India. The war left the Company in control of most of India. ... Operations began against the Pindaris, a band of Muslim mercenaries and Marathas from central India.

- Lord Dalhousie came to India as the Governor General of the East in India Company in 1848. His period of Governor Generaliship witnessed the stupendous growth of British Empire at the cost of army of the Indian states.

- The company took over the princely states of Satara (1848), Jaitpur and Sambalpur(1849), Bhagat (1850), Udaipur (Chhattisgarh) (1852), Jhansi (1853), Nagpur (1854), Tore and Arcot (1855) under the terms of the doctrine of lapse. Oudh (1856) is widely believed to have been annexed under the Doctrine of Lapse.
