We have to find the ratio in which the line segment joining the points A(3, 5) and B(-9, 3) is divided by the y - axis.

solution : The line segment joining the points A(3, 5) and B(-9, 3) is divided by the y - axis.

at y - axis , x = 0

using section formula,

x = (mx₂ + nx₁)/(m + n)

here x = 0, x₁ = 3 and x₂ = -9

⇒0 = (m × -9 + n × 3)/(m + n)

⇒0 = -9m + 3n

⇒m/n = 1/3

Therefore the ratio in which the line segment is divided by y - axis is 1 : 3.
