NUMBER OF BOYS PLAYING TENNIS : x

NUMBER OF BOYS PLAYING CRICKET : y

3x = y (in order to make equal sign we showed that 3 times of boys playing tennis is equal to boys playing cricket)

12 BOYS STARTED PLAYING TENNIS,

AND 12 LEFT CRICKET,

$x + 12 = y - 12$

WE KNOW THAT y = 3x (see above) ,

$x + 12 = 3x - 12$

$3x - 12 = x + 12$

$3x - x = 12 + 12$

$2x = 24$

$x = 12$

HENCE, 12 BOYS PLAYED TENNIS
