Answer:

x+2y=36

y=(36-x)/2

y=2x-7

36-x=4x-14

50=5x

x=10cm

Question:

The perimeter of an isosceles triangle is  36 cm. The length of the congruent sides is  7 cm less than twice the length of its base.  Find the length of the base of the triangle.

answer:

The length of the base of the triangle is 10 cm.

Given:

The perimeter of the isosceles triangle is 36 cm.

The length of the congruent sides is  7 cm less than twice the length of its base.

To find:

The length of the base of the triangle.

Explanation:

Let, the length of the base of the triangle be, 'n'.

∴ The length of each equal side = (n×2)-7

                                                     = 2n-7

According to the problem,

(2n-7)+(2n-7)+n = 36

⇒ 5n - 14 = 36

⇒ 5n = 36+14

⇒ 5n = 50

⇒ n = 50/5

⇒ n = 10 cm.

∴ The length pof the base of the triangle is 10 cm.
