i. Five less than three times a number.

if x is a number

3 times x = 3x

5 less than 3x = 3x - 5

y = 3x - 5

ii. Eight times the sum of a number and 5

if x is a number

sum of the number and 5 = (x + 5)

8 times the sum = 8(x + 5)

y = 8(x + 5)
