(i) CMLXV = 965

(ii) 140 = CXL

Let's see how.

In First case : C = 100 , M = 1000 , L = 50 X = 10 , V = 5

So, it is C ( 100 ) is subtracted from M (1000 ) so it becomes 900 .

L (50) is added to X (10) so it becomes 60. And V = 5.

All these are added together becomes 965 ( CMLXV ).

In second case : 140 i.e. 100 + 40

As we discussed above that in Roman numerals C = 100, X = 10 and L = 50

So 100 will be written C.

And 40 will be written 50-10 i. e. L - X

So, it will be written XL And the number will become CLX ( 140 ).
