In this story, Morris is an Assistant at Reginer Jewellery shop and he spoils a theft attempt of two people with his sheer sense of observation and intelligence.  He has the habit of reading detective novels from Edgar Allan Poe to Agatha Christie and studies the people whoever comes to the shop
He has the habit of observing and had observed a lady watching the shop standing opposite to the shop.  On the day of the robbery, an American comes in; he is a man of no knowledge on antique jewellery and stones.  While seeing the rings, one ring is found missing.  The American is taken inside a room to check.  By then, a richly dressed lady comes in and asks her broken brooch to be repaired.  Morris observes her action; she acts as if the brooch falls by mistake and robs the ring stuck by the American under the edge of the counter.  Morris asks her to give the ring stolen and lets both the American and the Lady go.  He also later explains this to Regnier, the owner of the shop.  Regnier was thankful to have such a brilliant Assistant in his shop.
