In this story the glum - faced man is handcuffed with his left hand and Mr Easton was handcuffed with his right hand

but glum faced man says that Mr Easton is a Marshall and he himself (glum faced man) is a convict in front of Miss Fairchild.

So, at last this proves that glum faced man was not a convict but a Marshall

and

Mr Easton was not a Marshall but actually he was a convict.
