I am sure the principal must be in his room.

might- shows very less possibility

May- shows more possibility

Must- shows highest possibility

In the question the statement conveys certainty .The person is sure about the principal being in his room.

There are two types of verbs :-

1) Main verb

2) Auxiliary verb or helping verb

Eg He is sleeping.

Here "is" is the helping verb and sleeping is the main verb.

Auxiliary verbs are of two types

1) Primary auxiliary verbs

2) Modal auxiliary verbs

Primary auxiliary verb can be used both as main verbs and as helping verbs .eg do ,be ,have.

1) eg I have eaten my food.

2) eg I am having dinner.

1) have- helping verb

2) have- main verb

Modal auxiliary verbs are only used as helping verbs eg can cloud may might should etc. Need dare and used to are exceptions to it.
