p+q=5

squaring both sides

p²+q²=5²

(p+q)²=25

p²+q²+2pq=25

p²+q²-2(6)=25

p²+q²+12=25

p²+q²=25-12

p²+q²=13

Answer:

(a+b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2(a)(b)

=> (p+q)^2 -2(p)(q) = p^2 + q^2

=> (5)^2 -2(6) = p^2 + q^2

=> 25 -12 = p^2 + q^2

=> 13 = p^2 + q^2

hence, the answer is option (d) 13.
