III. Long answer type questions

Q.1 What were the areas of conflict between the Bengal nawabs and the East India

company?

Q.2 What was "Doctrine of lapse",

Q.3 Write a note on set up of new administration by the British

Q.4 Describe the changes that occurred in the composition of the companies army

Explanation:

1.The conflict between the Bengal nawabs and the East India Company started when the Nawabs refused to grant the Company concessions and demanded large tributes for the Company,s right to trade. The Nawabs also denied the Company any right to mint coins and stopped it from extending its fortifications.

2.'Doctrine of Lapse' was the policy devised by the Governor-General of the East India Company in India. This doctrine was based on the idea that in case a ruler of a dependent state died childless, the right of ruling over the state reverted or lapsed to the sovereign.

3.British territories were broadly divided into administrative units called Presidencies. A new system of justice was established in 1772; each district was to have two courts - a criminal court - faujdari adalat, and a civil court - diwani adalat

4.The following changes occurred in the composition of the Company's army: (i) The Company started recruiting professional soldiers in place of sawars and paidal (foot) soldiers. (ii) The soldiers of the Company were now armed with muskets and matchlocks. (iii) The British began to develop a uniform military culture.
