The similarities between magnesium and beryllium are as follows:

  • Beryllium (Be) and Magnesium (Mg) appear to be greyish in color.
  • The electrons in Be and Mg are too strongly held by the nucleus due to their small size and hence do not get excited by the flame.
  • So, Be and Mg do not impart any color to the flame.
  • Both Be and Mg are kinetically inert to oxygen and water due to an oxide film on their surface.
  • In powdered form, Be burns to give Beo and Be₃N₂. Similarly, Mg gives Mg O and Mg₃N₂.

Explanation:

Similarities between lithium and beryllium

Beryllium  and  Magnesium both belong to same group in the periodic table which is group 2.

Both of them have small size and exhibit better ionizing energy.

Both of them also exhibit high electronegativity and high polarizing power

They are both resistant towards acidic reactions

Both have the ability to dissolve strongly in alkaline solutions
