a) The process shown is electrolysis of water acidified with dilute sulphuric acid.

b) Electrolysis is defined as the splitting up of an electrovalent or polar covalent compound in the molten or aqueous state to form free ions and their subsequent discharge as neutral atoms at the respective electrodes by means of electrolytic reactions involving oxidation and reduction.

c)Dissociation and Ionization:

H2O⇌ H+1   +   OH-1

H2SO4⇌ 2H+1   +   SO4-2

At Cathode:

H+  +   1e- ——> H X 2

H + H ------> H2

At Anode:

4OH -1  ---------> 4OH   +   4e-

4OH -------> 2H2O  + O2
