The bottom of a pond appears to be raised due to the phenomenon of REFRACTION.

  1. While having a look into the pond, light travels from denser medium(water) to rarer medium(air) after reflecting from the surface of the pond.
  2. According to the laws of refraction, when a ray of light passes from a denser medium to a rarer medium, it travels away from the normal and when it travels from a rarer medium to a denser medium , it bends towards the normal.
  3. This creates illusion of raised bottom as in this case of the pond.

1. The rays of light coming from the bottom of a pond bend away from the normal as they travel from water (denser medium) to air (rarer medium).

2. Hence, they appear to come from a point above the actual point from which they come.

Therefore, the bottom of a pond appears raised.

Hope it helps!
