Given:

Two circles with radius 8cm and 2cm touch each other

To find:

The distance between their centres

Solution:

We have given the radius of the circle as 8 cm and 2 cm

And it is also given that the circles are touching each other at any point on the circle only.

Then the distance between the centre of the circles is given by the sum of the radius of the circles.

So,

Distance between centres = Radius1 + Radius2

D = 8 + 2

D = 10 cm

The distance between their centres is 10 cm

SOLUTION

GIVEN

Two circles with radius 8cm and 2cm touch each other.

TO DETERMINE

The distance between their centres.

EVALUATION

CASE : 1

Circles touch externally

There are circles with radius 8cm and 2cm

Now if they touch externally

Then distance between their centres

= Radius of Big circle + Radius of small circle

= ( 8 + 2 ) cm

= 10 cm

Graph : For graph refer to the Figure 1

CASE : 2

Circles touch internally

There are circles with radius 8cm and 2cm

Now if they touch internally

Then distance between their centres

= Radius of Big circle - Radius of small circle

= ( 8 - 2 ) cm

= 6 cm

Graph : For graph refer to the Figure 2
