Ans - Village

Mahal referred to a village or a group of villages . The tax was collected considering it as a single unit. The village headman was responsible for collecting tax from the farmers and handing it to the british. Hence the name Mahalwari system.

It was initiated in 1822 by Holt mackenzie.

It was one of three major land revenue systems in British India.

The other two being Zamindari system (permanent settlement act) and Ryotwari system.

In Zamindari system(1793- Cornwallis) a landowner/zamindar was assigned to a land, and he collected the tax from the farmers .1/11 share went to the the zamindar and 10/11 to the British

In Ryotwari system(1820-Thomas Munro) the zamindar was removed and the farmers became the owner of the land .The rent was collected directly from the farmers.
