The chemical bonding and intermolecular forces in ionic compounds is so strong that the temperature required to achieve the minimum kinetic energy for melting is very high.

Ionic compounds are held together by electrostatic forces of attraction between the oppositely charged ions. As the ionic lattice contains such a large number of ions,a lot of energy is needed to overcome the ionic bonding. So they have high melting point.
