(ili) Rohan's mother is 26 years older than him. The product of
their ages (in years) 3 years from now will be 360. We would
like to find Rohan's present age.​

  • Let present age of Rohan be x
  • Let present age of Rohan's mother be y.
  • Rohan's age after three years be x + 3
  • Rohan's mother age after three years will be y + 3

GIVEN:

  • Rohan's mother is 26 years older than him.
  • y = 26 + x

  • The product of their ages 3 years from now will be 360.
  • (x+3) (y+3) = 360

TO FIND:

Rohan's Present age, x

SOLUTION:

Substitute y = 26 + x in (x+3) (y+3) = 360

(x + 3)(26 + x + 3) = 360 \\  \\ (x + 3)(29 + x) = 360 \\  \\ 29x + (29 \times 3) +  {x}^{2}  + 3x = 360 \\  \\  {x}^{2}  + 29x + 3x + 87 = 360 \\  \\  {x}^{2} + 32x + 87 - 360 = 0 \\  \\  {x}^{2}   + 32x  - 273 = 0 \\  \\  {x}^{2}  + 39x - 7x - 273 = 0 \\  \\ x(x + 39) - 7( x + 39) = 0 \\  \\ (x - 7)(x + 39) = 0

We get two solutions of x

1.

x - 7 = 0 \\  \\ x = 7

2.

x + 39 = 0 \\  \\ x =  - 39

Since age cannot be negative, this solution of x = -39 is not possible.

ANSWER:

So the present age of Rohan is 7

Rohan is 7 years old now.

Present age of his mother , y = 7 +26 = 33.

Rohan's mother is 33 years old now.
