Some examples of physical change are freezing of water, melting of wax, boiling of water, etc. A few examples of chemical change are digestion of food, burning of coal, rusting, etc. ... In a physical change, no new substance is formed. A chemical change is always accompanied by one or more new substance(s).

PHYSICAL CHANGE

  • Physical changes are changes affecting the form of a chemical substance, but not its chemical composition. Physical changes are used to separate mixtures into their component compounds, but can not usually be used to separate compounds into chemical elements or simpler compounds.

e.g :-

  • Crushing a can.
  • Crushing a can.Melting an ice cube.
  • Crushing a can.Melting an ice cube.Boiling water.
  • Crushing a can.Melting an ice cube.Boiling water.Mixing sand and water.
  • Crushing a can.Melting an ice cube.Boiling water.Mixing sand and water.Breaking a glass.

CHEMICAL CHANGES

  • Chemical changes cause a substance to change into an entirely substance with a new chemical formula. Chemical changes are also known as chemical reactions. The “ingredients” of a reaction are called reactants, and the end results are called products.

E.g :-

  • Burning wood.
  • Burning wood.Souring milk.
  • Burning wood.Souring milk.Mixing acid and base.
  • Burning wood.Souring milk.Mixing acid and base.Digesting food.
  • Burning wood.Souring milk.Mixing acid and base.Digesting food.Cooking an egg.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL CHANGE :-

  • In a physical change the appearance or form of the matter changes but the kind of matter in the substance does not. However in a chemical change, the kind of matter changes and at least one new substance with new properties is formed.

  • A physical property is a characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. Physical properties include color, density, hardness, and melting and boiling points. A chemical property describes the ability of a substance to undergo a specific chemical change.
