“Buttoo”, a small extract from a very long poem is composed in an Epic form. Buttoo revered Dronacharya as his master because Dronacharya was the best in archery, and Buttoo got his inspiration and knowledge from
him.
Explanation:
- Buttoo was low in caste however aspired to be a great archer. He was also very committed to pursue knowledge. Butto was refused to be taught by the famous archer's guru Dronacharya, because Buttoo didn't belong to the royal or rich family and then, the Guru loved Arjuna, wanting to make him the art master.
- Although Drona had declined to teach him, he still adored Drona as a teacher and learned archery science by himself. Despite his talents, Buttoo was never vain; he was modest and acknowledged his inspiration as Drona.
- Buttoo then returned to the forest, made an idol of Dronacharya and mastered archery perfectly. Dronacharya came to know this and found he was better than Arjuna. He asked Gurudakhshina from Butto as Buttoo had used Dronacharya's statue to learn archery. Dronacharya had asked Buttoo the thumb and Buttoo immediately gave it to Dronacharya as the dakhshina.
- Drona knew what he asked from Buttoo was something very cruel. By asking for Buttoo’s right thumb, Drona ensures that Buttoo would never be able to use the bow and arrow in his lifetime. Drona is aware of the fact that Buttoo adores him as his teacher and is ready to give up even his life because of him, but yet he takes advantage of this respect to support his royal protege, Arjuna. It is‘sad’ because Drona has actually not done anything to make Buttoo an expert archer.
- Buttoo understands his teacher’s dilemma when Drona announces that he is doing this for Arjuna’s sake, and to keep his own promise to Arjuna. Hence Buttoo doesn’t regret cutting his thumb.
- Drona purposely asked his right-thumb to sacrifice his ability to arch. This poem reflects Buttoo's most noble human qualities for his Dronacharya master. Seeing his these attributes, Dronacharya blesses Buttoo with immortal fame and name for his noble deed.
- Buttoo was not only strong physically, but also strong emotionally. He was not angry or even denying Drona, he left the matter to God, even if he lost his life or thumb unfairly, realizing he would never be a great archer. He was at peace with nature and God.
- Dronacharya also saw Butto as a role model for self-help, modesty and truth. Conclusively we can say ‘loyalty, dedication, truthfulness, humility, selflessness, brilliance in his art, sacrificing nature, intelligence, and so on are the great qualities of Buttoo.
