Explanation:

Both sodium and magnesium are metals and thus, they are electron rich in nature. So, in order to gain stability they can easily loose electrons.

Whereas chlorine is a non-metal and it is electron deficient in nature. Therefore in sodium chloride compound, electrons have been transferred from sodium atom to chlorine atom. As a result, an ionic bond will be formed.

On the other hand, in magnesium chloride molecule electrons have been transferred from magnesium to chlorine. As a result, there will also be formation of ionic bond between magnesium and chlorine.
