The Indian Judiciary was basically formed from the legal system set up by the British and other colonial powers. Since then, it has partly retained the main characteristics, though several modifications and amendments to the system, have been brought about.
The Jury System was the first to go as it was found to be highly biased, when it came to the case of British or foreign subjects. It was abolished in 1958 by The Indian Law Commission.
The East India Company started Mayor's court in centres like Calcutta, Madras and Bombay during the year 1926. Warren Hastings established District Diwani Adalats for civil cases and District Fauzdari Adalats for criminal cases in the 18th century. Lord Cornwallis established Circuit courts in major cities which took care of civil as well as criminal cases. All the judges were Europeans.
