'Small Pain in My Chest', written by Michael Mach narrates the war scene where a young soldier is sitting under a tree peacefully. The narrator is summoned by him and the soldier asks him a favor, i.e. a glass of water. There is a blood stain on his shirt, he'd been shot in the chest. The narrator brings out the sacrifice of the young soldier in the battlefield. They had been fighting the whole day and the whole night, his fellow soldiers lay dead all around. Looking at their corpses, he considers himself fortunate and considers the fatal wound in his chest as 'small pain' He is also perturbed to think what his wife and mother would think that he would sit there defeated in the battlefield defeated by the small pain in his chest. The soldier succumbs to his wounds and dies. His sacrifice is supreme as he is not bothered about his own wounds, rather he thinks of his companions who had already died. In front of their sacrifice, his was just a 'small pain'. The narrator was deeply agonized by the death of the soldier.
