Don’t just get rid of it because it has gone beyond it’s ‘sell-by’ date or ‘best-by’ date. It’s probably perfectly fine and healthy. We already discard and waste about a third of the food that reaches the retail and consumer level in the West.
It all depends upon the type of food, and the condition and age. But the VAST majority of foods are perfectly sound and safe LONG beyond the BB or SB dates. Health and safety issues do not suddenly arise on a certain date. If last year’s pancake mix, for example, has developed a slightly oxidized/rancid smell, then throw it in the composting bin. If milk looks separated or smells sour, or the yoghurt has started to show molds, dump it. But canned foods can be perfect for many years provided the can is bright, tight, and not leaking. Eggs are already 3–5 weeks old before they reach you, and can last many more weeks. Ready-eat, cryovac-packed deli meats can be fine past the BB date, but can also be inedible long BEFORE the BB date if the seal has broken and they’ve started to change colour. Look, smell, use your senses, and especially common sense before you heave food out.
